About This Tour

A private guided tour of the Prado Museum highlighting the collection's most significant works, led by a knowledgeable local guide. Your private guide leads you through the Prado's most significant rooms and works, explaining the history and stories behind the art as you go.

One of the more unsettling corners of the Prado's collection is Francisco Goya's set of 14 'Black Paintings,' created in the early 1820s when Goya, then in his seventies and increasingly isolated, painted them directly onto the plaster walls of his own house outside Madrid, a property known as the Quinta del Sordo, or 'Deaf Man's Villa.' He never gave them titles and never intended them for public display — they're widely read today as a reflection of his declining health, his fear of losing his mind, and a deeply bleak view of humanity. After his death the murals were carefully transferred from the walls onto canvas, and they entered the Prado's collection in 1889.

That darker, late period sits alongside the much brighter, earlier Goya the museum also holds — portraits of Spanish royalty and aristocracy, and scenes of everyday Madrid life — so a full walk through his work at the Prado covers a genuinely dramatic arc across one artist's career.

A straightforward, well-paced private tour like this one is a good fit for a first serious visit to the museum: rather than trying to cover everything, a knowledgeable guide can build a route through the Prado's most significant rooms and works, explaining the history and context behind each one as you go, so the visit builds a real sense of the collection rather than a blur of famous names.
