About This Tour

An information-packed private tour of the Prado Museum's highlights, adapted to novice art-lovers or serious art history buffs. See Prado Museum masterworks including Velázquez, El Greco, and Goya with a private guide who adapts the pace and depth to your level of interest.

The Prado almost wasn't an art museum at all. King Charles III originally commissioned the building in 1785 as a natural science museum, and architect Juan de Villanueva designed its calm, light-filled neoclassical halls with that purpose in mind. Construction dragged on for decades, interrupted by the Napoleonic invasion and the wars that followed, and by the time the building was finally ready, King Ferdinand VII and his wife, Maria Isabel de Bragança, had redirected its purpose entirely — turning it into a home for the royal family's art collections instead. It opened as an art museum on 19 November 1819, with 311 paintings on display, though the Spanish crown had already granted the institution as many as 1,510 works from royal residences.

That royal origin is exactly why the Prado's Velázquez and Goya holdings are so deep: these were court painters, and their major works came to the museum directly from the palaces they were originally painted for, rather than being assembled later through outside acquisitions.

A guide who can adjust pace and depth matters enormously here, since the Prado's collection is genuinely vast — moving slowly through a handful of masterworks with real context tends to leave visitors with far more than rushing past a long list of famous names.
