Plaza Mayor, the obvious starting point for a Madrid photoshoot, was built between 1580 and 1619 under King Philip III, with architect Juan Gómez de Mora carrying out plans originally sketched decades earlier by Juan de Herrera, the architect of El Escorial. Its uniform arcaded facades — rebuilt more than once after fires, the first in 1631 — are exactly the kind of symmetrical, timeless backdrop that photographs well in almost any light.
San Miguel Market, another stop on the route, has a less obvious history than its popularity today suggests: the site originally held a 13th-century church, demolished in 1809 after fire damage made it unsafe, before becoming an open-air fish market. The iron-and-glass market building visitors see today only opened in May 1916, and it's now the last surviving iron market hall left in Madrid — every other one from that era has since been torn down.
The Royal Palace, the session's grandest backdrop, is the largest royal palace in Western Europe, with more than 135,000 square metres of floor space and 3,418 rooms. The current building replaced the old Royal Alcázar, which burned down on Christmas Eve 1734; construction ran from 1738 to 1764, and King Charles III became the first monarch to actually live in it once it was finished.
Shooting across the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Market, Plaza de la Villa, and Almudena Cathedral in one session means moving across roughly four centuries of Madrid architecture in a single walk — real variety for a photographer to work with, not just one repeated style of backdrop.
