Plaza Mayor looks like it has always been the calm, café-lined square it is today, but its history is considerably rougher. Built between 1617 and 1619 under King Philip III and designed by the architect Juan Gómez de Mora, it was rebuilt by Gómez de Mora himself after a major fire in 1631 — a pattern that repeated more than once over the centuries, since the square's buildings were originally timber-framed.
For most of its history, Plaza Mayor was less a place to relax and more a stage for public life at its most dramatic: royal weddings and masked balls, yes, but also bullfights that packed up to 50,000 spectators onto the square's balconies, and the Spanish Inquisition's autos-da-fé, grim public rituals that were often followed by executions carried out on the spot. The bullfights continued here until 1878.
The walk continues to the Royal Palace and on to Almudena Cathedral next door, which has its own unusual story: construction began in 1883 but wasn't finished for more than a century, and in 1944 the design was deliberately switched from Neo-Gothic to Neoclassical specifically so the new cathedral would architecturally match its much older neighbor, the Royal Palace. It was finally consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1993 — making it the first cathedral in Spain ever consecrated by a sitting Pope.
