San José del Cabo's marina sits on the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) side of the Baja Peninsula, not the Pacific — a real, meaningful difference from the sunset cruises that leave from Cabo San Lucas's marina on the Pacific side. Sailing from here means calmer, more sheltered water and views toward the Sierra La Laguna mountains rising inland, rather than the open-ocean swell and the Arch that define a Cabo San Lucas sunset sail.
The real landmark locals watch for here is El Picacho, a distinctive peak that catches the day's last light and frames the sunset from the water — a different visual signature from the Land's End arch that anchors every Cabo San Lucas sunset photo. Because San José del Cabo's marina (Puerto Los Cabos) sees far less boat traffic than Cabo San Lucas's, this stretch of coastline tends to be noticeably quieter at golden hour, even during peak season.
San José del Cabo itself has kept more of its own identity than the resort corridor around Cabo San Lucas — a real colonial-era town center with its own plaza and mission church sits just inland from the marina, giving this sunset sail a genuinely different backdrop and pace from the marina scene roughly 20 miles down the coast.
