El Arco, the rock arch your guide points out from a scenic vantage point on this walk, is a roughly 200-foot natural formation carved by ocean currents at Land's End — the literal point where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Long before it became one of the most photographed landmarks in Mexico, the arch and its surrounding coves reportedly served as a hideout for pirates lying in wait for passing Spanish galleons.
Lover's Beach, tucked between El Arco and the cliffs of Land's End, is normally only reachable by boat — which is exactly why this tour frames it from the land side, through the story behind its name instead. The most commonly told version involves a shipwrecked sailor who fell in love with a local woman, only for her father to forbid the match and have the sailor killed, leading the woman, in grief, to take her own life on the same beach. It's worth being upfront that this is a local legend, not a documented historical event, though it's part of why the beach carries its romantic reputation today.
Right next door, on the Pacific-facing side of the same stretch of sand, is what locals call Divorce Beach — named not for any legend but for its real, dangerous currents and riptides, which make swimming there unsafe, in sharp contrast to the calm, protected water on Lover's Beach's Sea of Cortez side just meters away. The 'two beaches, two moods' story your guide tells draws on this real geographic contrast as much as the folklore.
