Cabo San Lucas earned its reputation as the self-styled "Marlin Capital of the World" through decades of real fishing history, not just marketing — the town's economy was built on commercial fishing through the first half of the 20th century, and that legacy carried over into sport fishing once tournaments like the Bisbee's Black & Blue (running since the late 1980s) and the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament (started in 1999) turned the area into one of the best-known marlin destinations anywhere.
What makes the waters this productive is where Cabo sits: it's near the meeting point of the cooler California Current flowing down from the north and a warmer tropical current coming up from the south, and that mixing zone is sharpened further by the nearby convergence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. The result is a nutrient-rich transition zone that draws baitfish, and with the ocean floor dropping to well over 1,000 feet just a few miles offshore, predators like marlin don't have to travel far from deep water to reach the boats.
Target species genuinely do shift with the season, which is why a charter like this adjusts rather than promising the same catch year-round — striped marlin are the most consistent target, present through much of the year with a peak from roughly November through February, while the regional favorite jack known locally as yellowtail (a different fish entirely from the Atlantic/Caribbean species called yellowtail snapper) is a common catch on shorter trips closer to shore.
