La Paz has been the capital of Baja California Sur since 1830, when catastrophic flooding forced the territorial government to relocate from Loreto, the peninsula's original capital. The city's own name has a real history behind it, too — Spanish expeditions first landed in the bay as far back as 1535 under Hernán Cortés himself, who named it Santa Cruz, but it was explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno who gave the settlement its lasting name, La Paz ('peace'), in 1596, after noting the peaceful welcome he received from the indigenous people already living along the bay.
The Malecón your guide walks you along is a real, continuous seafront promenade running roughly 5.5 kilometers from the Marina de la Paz in the south up to Playa Coromuel in the north. Unlike a generic boardwalk, La Paz's Malecón is dotted with large modern sculptures by local and international artists — many with marine themes echoing the bay itself — that have become symbols of the city in their own right, alongside small pocket beaches, a tourist pier, and shaded benches looking out over calm water.
La Paz is also the real administrative and cultural capital of Baja California Sur, home to roughly a quarter-million residents — a working Mexican state capital with its own government buildings and university, rather than a resort town built primarily for visitors. That gives it a genuinely different feel from the Los Cabos corridor: slower-paced streets, family-run seafood spots instead of resort restaurants, and a waterfront that locals actually use. The wider Bay of La Paz is also internationally known among divers as one of the best places on Earth to snorkel with whale sharks, the ocean's largest fish, typically present in its waters from roughly October through April — not a part of this particular driving day trip, but part of what makes La Paz more than just 'the other beach town.'
If your group chooses Todos Santos for the halfway stop instead of Cerritos Beach, you'll be in a town with its own real, documented history — founded in 1733 around the Mission of Santa Rosa de Todos Santos and later recognized as an official Pueblo Mágico in 2006 for its colonial architecture and arts scene. It's also the town most closely associated with the Eagles' song 'Hotel California,' a connection locals embrace even though the band has always denied it inspired the song. Cerritos Beach, the alternative stop, sits on the open Pacific about 45 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas and is one of the few beaches on this coast known for consistent, beginner-friendly waves rather than the area's typically rougher Pacific surf.
