Most of the snorkeling terrain directly around Cabo San Lucas isn't coral — it's rocky reef, granite boulders, ledges, and overhangs carved from the same stone as the city's famous El Arco and Friar's Rocks formations at Land's End. Chileno Bay, a short drive up the corridor, is the rare local exception with living coral; the water right off the marina and Land's End is granite-based instead.
That rock structure still draws a dense population of tropical fish because Cabo San Lucas sits at the literal meeting point of two different bodies of water — the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, better known as the Sea of Cortez — a convergence that brings species from both sides of the Baja peninsula into the same reef system.
Guides on this tour work from dive-level training rather than general boat-crew experience, which is the real basis for finding quieter rock formations away from the marina's busiest snorkel traffic — the same skill set used for scuba-certified diving, applied here at a slower, snorkel-friendly pace.
