Cabo San Lucas was a genuine, sleepy fishing settlement for most of its history before tourism arrived. Archaeological evidence shows people have lived around this stretch of Land's End for at least 10,000 years, but the modern town's story really begins in 1917, when an American company built a floating platform here to catch tuna; a decade later the Compañía de Productos Marinos cannery was founded, giving the fledgling village its first real economic base.
The shift from cannery town to destination came later, in the 1950s, when Cabo was reachable only by boat or small plane — which is exactly what drew Hollywood. Marlin and sailfish brought stars like John Wayne, Bing Crosby, and Errol Flynn down to fish by day, with Bing Crosby himself later buying into the Las Cruces resort property. Hotel Cabo San Lucas opened in 1961 and the Hacienda Hotel followed in 1963 near the old cannery site, and by the 1970s four more resorts had opened, setting the stage for the resort corridor that exists today — the same history your guide points to on this walking tour, well away from the marina crowds.
The hike up Mount Solmar — also known locally as El Vigía, 'the watchman' (Solmar itself loosely translates as 'sun-sea') — climbs the granite outcropping that forms the very tip of the Baja California peninsula, known as Land's End. It's a genuinely moderate hike, rising roughly 440 feet above the Land's End arch, and the payoff at the top is a rare vantage point where you can see Cabo San Lucas Bay, the Sea of Cortez, and the Pacific Ocean together in one sweep — one of the few easy, on-foot ways to take in both of Baja's seas from land.
