Balandra Beach's reputation is real, not marketing hype: it's consistently placed in international rankings of the world's best beaches, including recent editions of the World's 50 Best Beaches list, and is the only Mexican beach that regularly appears among them. It's known for shallow, calm, turquoise water (protected from open-ocean swell by the shape of the bay), a stretch of desert landscape meeting the sea, and a mushroom-shaped rock formation that's become the beach's signature photo spot. It's also a federally protected natural area, with daily visitor numbers regulated and strict limits on what can be brought onto the sand to keep it in the condition that earned it those rankings in the first place.
La Paz has been Baja California Sur's state capital since October 1974, when the old Territory of Baja California Sur split into two states. The city's own history runs much further back — Hernán Cortés landed in the bay in 1535 and named it Santa Cruz, though his attempt to settle it failed; the name La Paz ('peace') was given in 1596 after a later expedition led by Sebastián Vizcaíno reported a peaceful welcome from the local Pericú people. The Malecón, the roughly 5-kilometer seafront promenade that's the city's signature stroll, was inaugurated in 1926 and remains the natural place to start a morning in town.
The day's final stop, Todos Santos, shares some of that same mission-era and agricultural history — it grew up around one of the few reliable freshwater sources on this side of the peninsula — and was designated a Pueblo Mágico by Mexico's federal tourism authority in 2006, recognition for the galleries, boutiques, and restored adobe buildings that now line its historic core.
