Windsor Castle is the real starting point for understanding this day's deepest history: a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress raised by William the Conqueror around 1070, one of nine defensive castles he ringed roughly 25 miles apart around London so each stood a single day's march from the capital. What began as chalk earthworks and a wooden palisade around a 50-foot motte has been continuously occupied and expanded ever since, making it, by most historians' reckoning, the oldest and largest inhabited castle anywhere in the world.
Stonehenge, by contrast, is far older and far less understood. Archaeologists now believe the earthwork enclosure dates to about 3100 BC, with the stones themselves raised in phases across roughly 1,500 years — the smaller bluestones first, hauled an extraordinary 160 miles from the Preseli Hills in Wales, and the multi-ton sarsens added later from Marlborough Downs, just 15 miles away. No one fully agrees on why; that unresolved mystery is part of what still draws about a million visitors a year.
Oxford closes the day on a different note entirely: living, working academic history. Teaching here is recorded as early as 1096, making it the oldest English-speaking university in the world, and University College's 1249 charter is one of several colleges with a serious claim to being the oldest of Oxford's 30-plus constituent colleges — a debate current students still enjoy having in the pub.
