Eton College was founded in 1440 by a 19-year-old King Henry VI under the deliberately grand original name of "Kynge's College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore." Henry conceived it as a charity school for 70 poor boys who would go on to his newly founded sister college, King's College, Cambridge — modelling Eton closely on Winchester College, whose own headmaster he appointed as Eton's first Provost, and copying much of Winchester's statutes nearly word for word.
The college's fortunes shifted fast with politics: when Edward IV deposed Henry VI in 1461, the new king stripped most of Eton's assets and treasures, moving many of them across the river to St George's Chapel inside Windsor Castle — the same chapel that still stands within the castle walls today and now holds the tombs of ten English monarchs.
Windsor Castle itself began a few centuries earlier, around 1070, as a Norman motte-and-bailey fort thrown up by William the Conqueror — one link in a chain of defensive castles spaced a day's march apart around London. Unlike most of its Norman siblings, it never fell out of royal use, which is why it's still cited as the oldest continuously occupied castle in the world.
