Windsor Castle's claim to being the world's oldest continuously occupied castle rests on an unbroken run stretching back to around 1070, when William the Conqueror built the first version here as a Norman motte-and-bailey fortress — a 50-foot earthen mound topped with a wooden palisade, part of a defensive ring of nine castles spaced roughly 25 miles apart around London. Every other castle in that original ring has at some point been abandoned, ruined, or rebuilt from scratch; Windsor alone has simply kept going, generation after generation, for close to a thousand years.
Today the castle covers roughly 484,000 square feet, commonly cited as the largest floor area of any inhabited castle anywhere, and it remains one of only three official residences of the British monarch, alongside Buckingham Palace in London and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh — meaning a visit here is to a genuinely working royal site, not a preserved relic.
