About This Tour

An academic guide tends to gravitate toward the abbey's literary history, and Poets' Corner is where that history is most concentrated. Geoffrey Chaucer became its first occupant in 1400, though his burial there at the time had more to do with his day job as Clerk of Works for the Palace of Westminster than with his fame as a writer — The Canterbury Tales hadn't yet earned him the reputation it holds today. His current, more prominent tomb wasn't actually built until 1556, over 150 years after his death, commissioned by an admirer named Nicholas Brigham; poet Edmund Spenser was buried nearby in 1599, and from there a genuine tradition took hold that's continued for more than four centuries since.
A historian's framing tends to draw out exactly this kind of layered, sometimes accidental history — how a bureaucratic job title in 1400 ended up founding one of English literature's most famous shrines a century and a half later — rather than treating the abbey as a single static monument.
