The abbey standing today is largely a 13th-century rebuild of a much older church. King Henry III ordered the reconstruction in 1245, around the shrine of Edward the Confessor, hiring master mason Henry of Reyns to design it in the Gothic style — modeled closely on Reims Cathedral in France, which explains why the abbey's soaring proportions feel distinctly continental rather than purely English. Edward the Confessor's remains were moved into a new shrine at the heart of the rebuilt church in 1269, the same shrine still at the abbey's center today.
