About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — real, dedicated guided time inside Westminster Abbey, genuine site of every English coronation since 1066. This is a private tour for your group only, dedicated entirely to Westminster Abbey. Real, genuine history is covered, including the abbey's role in every English coronation since 1066.
The abbey's role as England's coronation church goes back further than most visitors realize. Edward the Confessor had the original church built between 1045 and 1050 and it was consecrated on 28 December 1065 — he died just days later, having never seen it finished in its final form. William the Conqueror chose to be crowned there on Christmas Day 1066, barely a year after the consecration, and every English and British monarch since has followed suit at the same site, with only two exceptions in nearly 960 years: Edward V, who never reached his coronation after being held in the Tower of London, and Edward VIII, who abdicated beforehand.
That unbroken run — through the medieval period, the Reformation, two world wars, and into the present monarchy — is what dedicated, focused time inside the abbey is really built around: not just seeing the building, but standing in the exact space where that nine-and-a-half-century continuity actually happened.
