About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — Wapping's real historic docks and genuine famous riverside pubs. This is a private tour for your group only. Wapping's real historic docks are explored, alongside genuine famous riverside pubs.
Wapping sits on the Thames' north bank between St Katharine Docks and Shadwell, and its layout still reflects that maritime past. The Western Docks of the London Docks complex opened in 1805, built to handle wine, brandy, tobacco, and rice, and expanded east over the following decades with the Shadwell Basin as trade grew.
In the 18th century, the riverfront here was lined with as many as 36 pubs, drawing visitors that reportedly included Dr Samuel Johnson. Only three of those original houses survive today, which gives a sense of how much of this working waterfront has disappeared since.
The best-known survivor, the Prospect of Whitby, claims the title of London's oldest riverside pub, with parts dating to 1520 (the exterior was rebuilt in the 19th century, though much of the original interior remains). It wasn't always called that — the original name was the Devil's Tavern, a nod to its clientele of thieves and smugglers. It was renamed in the 18th century after a Whitby collier ship that regularly delivered coal here, once the landlord decided he'd rather not be associated with crime. Dickens and Samuel Pepys are both named among its patrons.
