About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — a genuine, extended exploration of the Wallace Collection, a real, lesser-visited London museum treasure. This is a private tour for your group only, over a genuine extended 3-hour format. The Wallace Collection, a real hidden-gem London museum, is explored in depth.
The Wallace Collection sits inside Hertford House, a genuine former aristocratic townhouse in Manchester Square that once belonged to the Seymour family, the Marquesses of Hertford. The collection itself was built up privately across the 18th and 19th centuries by successive Marquesses and, finally, by Sir Richard Wallace, the illegitimate son of the 4th Marquess, who inherited both the house and the art.
What makes it a public museum at all today is a single, specific bequest — Wallace's widow, Julie Amelie Charlotte Castelnau, left the entire collection to the British nation in 1897, on the strict condition that not a single object would ever leave the collection, even for a loan to another museum. It opened to permanent public view in 1900 and the rule still holds — every piece you see here has never traveled anywhere else since.
That no-loans condition is part of why so many visitors describe the Wallace Collection as a genuine hidden gem — its real Rembrandts, Canalettos, and one of the finest Sèvres porcelain collections anywhere have never gone on tour, so you'll only ever see them in Manchester Square. A 3-hour private format gives real room to take that in properly.
