The Kray twins' grip on the East End underworld is central to this route, and one real moment defines it: on the night of 9 March 1966, Ronnie Kray walked into the Blind Beggar pub in Whitechapel and shot George Cornell, a former associate turned rival, at point-blank range in the saloon bar. Cornell died of the head wound; the bullet went on to lodge in the bar's wall. Combined with a second killing by Ronnie's twin brother Reggie, the murder eventually led to both twins' conviction and life sentences in 1969, ending their reign over London's organized crime.
London's criminal history runs much deeper than the 1960s, though. For roughly 600 years, until the late 18th century, Tyburn — near today's Marble Arch — was the city's main execution site, where crowds of up to 50,000 would gather to watch hangings at the three-legged 'Tyburn Tree.' Executions shifted to Newgate Prison in 1783, where they continued publicly outside the prison walls until 1868; Newgate itself stood at the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey for over 700 years before its demolition in 1904.
