The V&A's origin is unusually specific — it grew directly out of the success of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the world's first international exhibition, held in Hyde Park's Crystal Palace. Henry Cole, who helped organize that exhibition, used leftover Treasury funding (a £5,000 grant) to buy a founding set of objects and open a new Museum of Manufactures in 1852, with a deliberate mission: make good design available to ordinary working people and inspire British manufacturers.
That mission is exactly why the V&A's collection leans so heavily toward design and decorative arts rather than fine art alone — furniture, textiles, ceramics, fashion, ironwork — genuinely different territory from a painting-focused gallery like the National Gallery across town.
