Six hours gives a black cab driver enough runway to cover London in genuine depth rather than skim it, and Buckingham Palace is worth the extra time: the real working palace has 775 rooms, including 19 state rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, and 78 bathrooms. The Changing of the Guard outside it is a free, roughly 45-minute ceremony — the New Guard, in scarlet tunics and bearskin hats, parades down the Mall accompanied by a military band and formally replaces the Old Guard. It runs daily in summer and on alternate days in winter, so a longer tour has a better chance of timing a visit around it.
St Paul's Cathedral gets real attention too. Christopher Wren's dome — his masterpiece, built after he'd already tested the design at a smaller scale on his own parish church, St Stephen Walbrook — survived the Blitz almost by accident of both sides' intentions: Winston Churchill ordered it protected at all costs for morale, while German bomber crews reportedly avoided bombing the dome directly because they used it as a landmark for aiming elsewhere. Incendiaries did hit the dome's wooden structure on 29 December 1940, and wardens stationed up there had to fight the small fires with buckets of water hauled up from the main floor, since hose pressure couldn't reach that high.
With the extra hours, there's also time to stop properly at Trafalgar Square, where Nelson's Column — started in 1840, 35 years after Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar, and completed over three years — stands just under 52 metres tall. Its four bronze guardian lions weren't added until 1867, more than two decades later, and were sculpted by Edwin Landseer, an animal painter who had never sculpted before; he reportedly studied the anatomy of a decomposing lion from London Zoo to get the pose right.
