Kids touring the Tower almost always ask about the ravens, and it's a genuinely good story to tell them — legend holds that if the ravens ever leave, the Tower (and the kingdom) will fall. The most repeated version traces to King Charles II, who reportedly wanted the birds gone because they bothered his royal astronomer, John Flamsteed, but was warned of disaster if he removed them — so instead he decreed that at least six ravens must always be kept at the Tower.
Historians note the earliest clearly documented mention of the Tower's ravens only goes back to an 1895 magazine report, so the legend's exact age is genuinely uncertain — but the ravens themselves are very real today, with as many as eight currently living there (fed, cared for, and bred on-site since 1987), each one with its own name and its wing feathers trimmed just enough to keep it from flying off entirely.
