Among the Tower's real treasures, the Crown Jewels are the one almost every visiting group wants to see up close, and the collection has a genuinely dramatic backstory. The medieval Crown Jewels were deliberately destroyed — melted down and sold off by Parliament in 1649 after the execution of Charles I — so nearly everything on display today was remade for Charles II's restoration coronation in 1661. The Imperial State Crown alone is set with 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds, 269 pearls, and 4 rubies, and it still gets worn by the monarch at the annual State Opening of Parliament.
One stone in particular has real, documented age behind it: St Edward's Sapphire, set at the top of the Imperial State Crown's cross, is said to have been discovered in King Edward the Confessor's tomb in 1163, after being worn in a ring during his lifetime in the 11th century.
Because the format here is flexible enough for either a family outing or a group of friends, the pace isn't locked to one audience — your guide can lean more into the Crown Jewels' real royal ceremonial use, or spend more time on the Tower's broader medieval history, depending on what your particular group finds most engaging.
