About This Tour

A private tour for your group only — real British taverns and pubs, with genuine food and drink tastings. This is a private tour for your group only. Real British taverns and pubs are visited, with genuine food and drink tastings throughout.

London's pub culture runs deeper than almost any other city's — the word "pub" is simply short for "public house," and licensed drinking establishments here trace back through medieval alehouses and coaching inns to Roman-era taverns serving the original city of Londinium. Formal regulation arrived centuries ago too: England's Ale Houses Act — passed by Parliament in 1551 and taking effect on 1 May 1552 — required every alehouse keeper to be licensed by local justices, an early attempt to bring some order to what had already become, by then, a genuinely enormous trade.

What survives today is a real patchwork of different eras under one roof in many cases — a medieval cellar, a Georgian facade, Victorian etched glass — since so many London pubs have been continuously rebuilt and reused on the same sites for centuries rather than simply preserved as museum pieces, which is part of why a tasting tour through several of them covers such different real decades of the city's history in one evening.
