About This Tour

A private tour for your group only — a genuine, extended 3-hour exploration of Tate Britain's real British art collection. This is a private tour for your group only, over a genuine extended 3-hour format. Tate Britain's real, genuine British art collection is explored in depth.

Tate Britain exists because of sugar, not art patronage in the traditional sense — Sir Henry Tate built his fortune as a sugar refiner, most notably after buying the German patent for making sugar cubes in 1872, and by the 1880s was wealthy enough to offer his personal collection of 19th-century British art to the nation. He backed that offer with an £80,000 donation to actually build the gallery.

The building opened on the Millbank site in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art — its original, more literal name. It wasn't renamed the Tate Gallery, after its sugar-magnate founder, until 1932, once its role expanded to also house Britain's national collection of modern art alongside the historic British works Tate had originally donated.

A 3-hour format gives real depth beyond the obvious highlights, with time to look at the collection through Tate's own original intent — a dedicated home for British art specifically, distinct from the more international scope of a museum like the National Gallery.
