Graffiti first showed up on London's walls in the 1970s, brought over by a generation who'd absorbed it from New York hip-hop and film rather than any homegrown scene. What developed in the East End through the 1980s was something distinct — less about tagging a name across the city, more about deliberate image-making and political statement, claimed on the walls and railway arches around Shoreditch and Brick Lane.
Banksy's arrival in the late 1990s is often credited with shifting how this work was seen — proof that it could function as real art rather than simple vandalism. His first confirmed London pieces went up between 2001 and 2003, in the same East End streets this tour covers.
Because walls here are repainted constantly, what counts as "the scene" changes week to week — this is one of the only parts of London where a guide's up-to-date knowledge of which piece is where matters more than any guidebook.
