About This Tour

Stonehenge's modern visitor experience is itself a fairly recent, and genuinely hard-won, piece of history. For decades the only facilities at the stones were a 1960s concrete building and a scatter of Portakabins — once memorably called "a national disgrace" by a UK parliamentary committee. English Heritage finally opened a proper visitor centre, designed by Denton Corker Marshall and funded substantially by the Heritage Lottery Fund, in December 2013, about 1.5 miles from the stones. English Heritage and the National Trust now jointly manage the approaches to the monument.
Windsor Castle, meanwhile, holds its own record: at roughly 484,000 square feet, it's generally cited as the largest inhabited castle in the world, and it remains one of the three official residences of the British monarch alongside Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
Bath's hot spring — the reason the Romans built here at all — rises through limestone fissures at a near-constant 45°C, fed by rainwater that fell on the Mendip Hills thousands of years before resurfacing here, which the Romans channeled into the bathing complex that still bears their engineering today.
