Stonehenge's real puzzle isn't when it was built so much as how far its stones traveled to get there. The smaller bluestones, each weighing 4 to 8 tons, were quarried in the Preseli Hills of Pembrokeshire and somehow moved 160 miles to Salisbury Plain around 3000 BC — a distance that remains, as far as prehistoric megaliths go, without real parallel anywhere on Earth. The much larger sarsens came later, from Marlborough Downs just 15 miles off, with the whole monument assembled across roughly 1,500 years rather than in a single building campaign.
Bath's Roman Baths tell a gentler story. The site was developed from around 60-70 AD as a temple and bathing complex honoring Sulis Minerva — a local fusion of the Celtic water goddess Sulis and the Roman goddess of wisdom — built around a natural spring that still rises through limestone fissures at roughly 45°C. Visitors once scratched curses onto metal tablets and dropped them into the Sacred Spring, asking Sulis Minerva to punish whoever had wronged them; archaeologists have recovered dozens of these messages intact.
The Cotswolds round out the day with a different kind of real history: honey-colored limestone villages built from local stone quarried for centuries, their warm tone and the region's wool-trade wealth both still visible in every cottage wall.
