About This Tour

A private tour for your group only — St Albans, a real genuine Roman-era city with surviving ancient ruins. This is a private tour for your group only. St Albans, a real genuine Roman-era city (originally Verulamium) with surviving ancient ruins, is explored.

St Albans sits on the site of Verulamium, which by the 2nd century AD had grown into the third-largest town in Roman Britain after Londinium and Colchester. It began as Verlamion, an Iron Age settlement of the Catuvellauni tribe, was formally conquered by Rome in AD 43, and was granted municipium status — a step up from an ordinary provincial town — around AD 50. Verulamium's prosperity made it a deliberate target during Boudica's revolt in AD 61, when the town was burned to the ground before being rebuilt even larger.

By around AD 140 the rebuilt town covered some 100 acres and had its own forum, basilica, public baths, temples, and a genuine Roman theatre — built around AD 14 and now recognized as one of the only fully excavated theatres of its specific type (with a stage rather than just an amphitheatre floor) anywhere in Britain. It was rediscovered in 1869 and properly excavated in the 1930s, and the surrounding Verulamium Park still holds visible stretches of the old city walls and the outline of the Roman London Gate.

A dedicated half-day here means real time to actually walk the excavated theatre and park rather than treating St Albans as a drive-by footnote on a longer multi-stop itinerary.
