The Houses of Parliament you'll see from the cab aren't the medieval original — most of the building standing today dates only to the mid-1800s. The old Palace of Westminster burned down on the night of 16 October 1834, after discarded wooden tally sticks used for centuries by the Exchequer were carelessly disposed of in furnaces beneath the House of Lords and triggered a chimney fire. Only a handful of medieval structures survived, including Westminster Hall and the Jewel Tower. Architect Charles Barry, working with Augustus Pugin on the Gothic Revival detailing, won the rebuilding competition in 1836; construction ran for roughly 30 years and outlived both designers.
Since 1987, the rebuilt palace — together with Westminster Abbey and St Margaret's Church next door — has carried UNESCO World Heritage status, recognition of just how influential this one stretch of riverbank has been on architecture, law, and government worldwide. Seeing it by black cab means your driver can pull over for a proper look rather than keep you moving with the crowd on the bridge.
Tower Bridge, further along the river, has its own distinct engineering story: opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales, its two bascules — each weighing over 1,000 tons — were originally raised by steam-powered hydraulics and could lift to 83 degrees in about five minutes flat. The system was switched to electro-hydraulic power in 1972, but the Victorian machinery itself is still on display inside the bridge's engine rooms.
