For most of the 20th century, Shoreditch was a working industrial neighbourhood built on the textile and furniture trades. When those industries collapsed through the 1970s and 80s, they left behind a stretch of empty warehouses, derelict factories, and vacant lots — the kind of cheap, overlooked space that artists could actually afford. By the early 1990s, a loose community of studios, squats, and makeshift galleries had formed around Old Street and Brick Lane.
London's graffiti scene traces further back, to the 1970s, carried over by a generation who'd picked it up from New York hip-hop and film rather than any local tradition. What took shape in Shoreditch through the 1980s was a different strain again — less about tagging a name, more about image-making and claiming public space, painted on the walls of Brick Lane, Curtain Road, and the railway arches around Shoreditch High Street.
Banksy's earliest London pieces went up here between 2001 and 2003, including "Guard Dog" on Rivington Street — still there today, kept behind protective perspex. His arrival in the late 1990s is often credited with proving that this kind of work could be real art, not just vandalism, which is part of why Shoreditch is now treated as one of the more significant open-air gallery districts in Europe.
