The address 221B Baker Street has a genuinely odd real-world history. When Arthur Conan Doyle introduced it in his 1887 novel A Study in Scarlet, Baker Street's actual house numbers didn't go anywhere near that high — the street was later extended, and numbers eventually caught up. For decades after, the building society Abbey National occupied premises at 219–229 Baker Street and famously employed a full-time secretary just to answer the volume of fan mail addressed to the fictional detective.
The Sherlock Holmes Museum opened nearby on 27 March 1990, in a genuine 1815 townhouse the City of Westminster granted permission to use the number 221B — even though the building sits between the real addresses 237 and 241. That arrangement triggered a 15-year dispute with Abbey National over who had the right to receive 'Sherlock Holmes's' mail, a dispute that only ended once Abbey National's building closed in 2005.
Beyond Baker Street, the walk takes in Russell Square and Whitehall — real London locations Conan Doyle wove into the stories, giving the fictional detective's world an actual, walkable geography that still overlaps with the real city today.
