Buckingham Palace has only been the monarch's official London residence since 1837, when a young Queen Victoria moved in — before that, the royal family's main London home was St James's Palace, and the Changing of the Guard ceremony itself actually began there in 1689 before later settling permanently at Buckingham Palace once the court relocated. The tradition traces back further still, to the Yeomen of the Guard established under Henry VII after the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
The guard detail swapping duty outside the Palace today is drawn from one of the Household Division's foot guards regiments, several of which rank among the oldest continuously serving units in the British Army. Scheduling has shifted over the decades — for a long stretch the ceremony ran daily, but it now typically happens on alternating days outside the summer season, with the real schedule checked and confirmed before each departure so a visit isn't timed against outdated information.
Because the ceremony's real frequency can change with royal and state commitments, your guide builds in flexibility — if the guard change itself isn't running that day, the route still takes in the Palace's real architecture and grounds, plus other genuine Royal London sites along the way, so the day isn't dependent on one single event lining up.
