About This Tour

London exists because of the Thames. The Romans built the first bridge across it, around 50 CE, close to where London Bridge still stands today, connecting the settlement on the north bank to the marshy ground of Southwark. The river itself was once wider and shallower, threading between islands and marshes that have long since been paved over.

By the time Tower Bridge was conceived in the 1890s, several more crossings had already been added — Waterloo Bridge in 1817, a rebuilt London Bridge in 1831, and the current Westminster Bridge in 1862. Tower Bridge itself, built between 1886 and 1894 and opened on 30 June 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales, was designed to connect the roughly 39% of Londoners who lived east of London Bridge, while still letting tall ships reach the Pool of London.

The Thames remains genuinely tidal through central London, and anyone who works on the river still plans around tide tables that predict exactly how far the water will rise and fall at a given stretch — a detail that shapes which bank you can land at, and when, on a day combining boat and land.
