About This Tour

A private tour for your group only — the real, 1,000-year-old Tower of London, home to the genuine Crown Jewels. This is a private tour for your group only. The real Tower of London is explored, including genuine access to the Crown Jewels.

The Tower of London's story starts right after the Norman Conquest — William the Conqueror began fortifying the site in 1066, and the White Tower itself, the stark stone keep that gives the whole complex its name, is traditionally dated to construction starting around 1078 (tree-ring evidence from the timber actually points to the work beginning a year or two earlier, in 1075-1079). Bishop Gundulf of Rochester oversaw the building on William's orders, and for centuries afterward the Tower served not just as a fortress but as a royal palace, an armoury, and a prison.

Nearly a thousand years on, the real Crown Jewels on display today aren't the original medieval set — most of those were melted down by Parliament in 1649 after Charles I's execution, and St Edward's Crown now kept at the Tower was remade for Charles II's coronation in 1661. It was last used to crown a monarch in 2023, for Charles III.

With a full 3-hour private format, there's genuine time to take in both the Tower's deep medieval architecture and its more recent working history as the home of the Crown Jewels, at whatever pace suits your group, with a private guide filling in the real detail behind each stop rather than rushing a fixed script.
