Every London black cab driver earns the right to that distinctive vehicle by passing The Knowledge, a licensing exam dating to the 1800s that typically takes about three years of study. Candidates must memorize roughly 25,000 streets and 320 standard routes across the city, plus the landmarks along each one, before they're allowed behind the wheel.
