Oxford has a real, well-documented claim to being the oldest English-speaking university in the world: teaching here is recorded as far back as 1096, and the university grew rapidly after 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. Several colleges each argue they're the oldest of Oxford's 30-plus constituent colleges — University College points to a 1249 charter — a rivalry current students still enjoy arguing about centuries later.
