The Lake Huron shore west of London has become one of Ontario's newest wine regions, centred on Huron County near the beaches of Grand Bend. The cool climate and clay-and-shale soils suit varieties such as Riesling, chardonnay, Marquette and cabernet franc, and the region mixes wine with cider, craft brewing and fruit-based spirits.
A day of tastings spread across boutique producers and larger facilities gives you a good picture of how the region is growing. Because the drive between stops is long and rural, a private driver is the right solution; no one in your group has to limit tasting.
Tastings are priced per person at many venues, so confirm what your tour includes. Spring and summer are busiest, and a quieter weekday outing often gets more time with the producers themselves.
