About This Tour

A private walking tour for your group only — Notting Hill's real colorful streets and genuine Portobello Road market. This is a private walking tour for your group only. Notting Hill's real colorful streets are explored, including the genuine Portobello Road market.

Before it was Portobello Road, this was Green's Lane — little more than a winding country track running through hayfields and orchards up to Kensal Green. The name changed around 1740, borrowed from nearby Portobello Farm, itself named for a British naval victory at Porto Bello, Panama, in 1739. It stayed mostly rural until the second half of the 19th century, when the new residential streets of Paddington and Notting Hill grew up on either side of it.

A market had formed on the road by around 1870, though it looked nothing like today's antiques stalls — early traders sold fresh food and everyday household goods, and the street worked more as a local flea market for decades. The shift toward antiques only really took hold after the Second World War. Since the 1940s, Portobello has built its reputation stall by stall, growing into one of the UK's largest and best-known antiques markets, now spread across roughly a mile of road.

Notting Hill's rows of pastel-painted terraced houses, a short walk from the market, became widely known partly through decades of being used as a filming backdrop — a detail that still draws photographers as much as the stalls do. Either way, the two halves of the neighbourhood, quiet residential streets and loud market energy, sit only minutes apart on foot.
