About This Tour

The building itself is as much a reason to visit as what's inside it. Architect Alfred Waterhouse took over the project in the 1870s after the original competition winner died unexpectedly, and he designed the whole structure in terracotta rather than stone, specifically because it held up better against Victorian London's coal-smoke-heavy air. Construction ran from 1873 to 1880, with the museum opening to the public in 1881.

Look closely at the facade and you'll find genuine design intent in the detail — Waterhouse filled it with sculpted animals, deliberately placing extinct species on the east wing and living ones on the west, in line with founder Sir Richard Owen's vision of a building meant to feel like, in his own words, a 'cathedral to nature.'

With real, exclusive access and dedicated time for your group alone, there's genuine room to look past the obvious specimens and actually take in Waterhouse's architecture — a part of the museum's story visitors moving through a crowded public day easily miss entirely.
