About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, genuinely designed for families — the Natural History Museum's real dinosaur exhibits. This is a private tour for your group only, genuinely designed for families. Real dinosaur exhibits at the Natural History Museum are a genuine highlight.
Every kid who walks into the museum's main hall used to see Dippy — a plaster cast of a Diplodocus skeleton, gifted to the museum in 1905 and the first full sauropod dinosaur cast ever displayed anywhere in the world. Dippy stood in that entrance hall from 1979 until 2017, when the museum made a deliberate swap.
In Dippy's place now hangs Hope, a real blue whale skeleton — not a cast, an actual 25-metre-long, 221-bone skeleton from a whale that washed up on an Irish sandbar back in 1891. The museum chose to lead with Hope specifically because a real, endangered-species skeleton better fits its current mission around studying and protecting the planet, rather than keeping the dinosaur cast as the star attraction.
Genuine dinosaur galleries are still very much part of the museum beyond that entrance hall, and this kid-friendly format leans into both — the dinosaur exhibits that reliably hook younger visitors, plus the real story of why the museum's own most famous specimen changed in 2017, told at a pace built for families.
