The gallery's current home in Trafalgar Square — the building most visitors picture when they think of the National Gallery — dates to 1838, when the growing collection outgrew its original Pall Mall townhouse (the former home of the collector whose paintings started the gallery in the first place, back in 1824). William Wilkins designed the Neoclassical building that still stands there today.
The collection itself has kept expanding well beyond its original 38 founding paintings, through gifts from other 19th-century collectors including Sir George Beaumont and Reverend William Holwell Carr — meaning today's visitors are seeing centuries of donated masterworks, not a single person's private taste.
