About This Tour

A private tour for your group only, led by a real art specialist — the National Gallery's genuine world-class paintings. This is a private tour for your group only, led by a real art specialist. The National Gallery's genuine world-class collection is explored.

The National Gallery exists largely because of one well-timed coincidence: in 1824, the British government unexpectedly received a war-debt repayment from Austria just as the private art collection of John Julius Angerstein, a wealthy insurance broker, came up for sale after his death. Parliament voted to buy 38 of his paintings — including works by Raphael and Hogarth's Marriage à-la-Mode series — for £60,000, and the gallery opened to the public that same year inside Angerstein's own former townhouse on Pall Mall.

The collection quickly outgrew that townhouse. In 1838 it moved to its current Neoclassical building in Trafalgar Square, designed by William Wilkins, as further donations from other collectors kept expanding what the nation owned.

With a real specialist leading the tour, the focus goes beyond just naming famous paintings — there's time to walk through how a private 18th-century collection became one of the world's great public galleries, and to look closely at individual works with someone trained specifically in art history rather than general sightseeing.
