London's big-street Christmas lights tradition started on Regent Street in 1954, when local retailers put up a display specifically to prove that post-war London didn't have to look drab heading into Christmas. Oxford Street followed with its own display in 1959, and for a while the two streets were effectively racing each other for attention.
The lights weren't a constant fixture, either — central London's displays were largely scrapped from the late 1960s through the late 1970s, before Oxford Street staged a comeback in 1978 with a Star Wars-inspired laser display. Celebrity switch-on events followed from 1981, eventually drawing crowds like the half-million fans who turned out when the Spice Girls flipped the switch in the mid-1990s.
Today the major West End streets typically switch their lights on during the first two weeks of November — a real, dateable tradition, not a vague "holiday season" gesture, which is why this tour runs on a genuinely fixed seasonal window rather than year-round.
