About This Tour
A private walking tour for your group only — real Bloomsbury literary history, tracing Dickens, Virginia Woolf, and WB Yeats. This is a private walking tour for your group only. Real Bloomsbury literary history is traced, including genuine connections to Dickens, Virginia Woolf, and WB Yeats.
In 1904, after their father's death, sisters Virginia and Vanessa Stephen moved to 46 Gordon Square — and it was there, in the early 1900s, that a loose circle of friends began meeting regularly to share work and argue about politics, philosophy, and art. That circle became known as the Bloomsbury Group.
Its core members included E.M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Clive Bell, Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant, and Virginia's eventual husband, Leonard Woolf. Virginia Woolf hosted the group's Thursday gatherings and went on to write Mrs Dalloway (1925) and A Room of One's Own (1929) while living in the area.
Charles Dickens also has a real, documented connection to the district — his home at 48 Doughty Street, now the Charles Dickens Museum, sits right at Bloomsbury's edge, and it's where he wrote Oliver Twist and part of The Pickwick Papers.
For roughly three decades in the early 20th century, this quiet, stately part of London was genuinely one of the country's hubs for literature, art, and science — though the Bloomsbury Group itself had largely dissolved by the early 1930s.
