Old Compton Street has functioned as the social spine of queer London for more than a century, and by the late 20th century its bars, cafés, and bookshops had made it the single most visibly LGBT street in Britain.

One of its anchor venues, now known as Comptons of Soho, opened in 1890 as the Swiss Hotel — it wasn't until a full renovation in 1986 that it became the openly gay bar around which the modern Soho scene coalesced.

Soho's broader identity as a refuge for artists, refugees, and freethinkers made this kind of visibility possible in the first place; for much of the 20th century, that visibility existed mainly within the confines of private members' clubs and unmarked bars, well before it moved out onto the street itself.

Not all of that history is comfortable. The Admiral Duncan, a well-known gay pub on Old Compton Street, was the target of a nail-bomb attack in 1999, a hate crime that killed three people. The street's current openness exists in that longer context, not despite it.
