The White Cliffs of Dover are chalk — a geological band that runs beneath much of southern England — and they've served as a natural line of defense since Roman Britannia, roughly 2,000 years ago. At just 21 miles from France, the narrowest crossing to mainland Europe, this stretch of coast has always mattered strategically as much as scenically, which is exactly why Dover grew into one of the busiest ports in the world and why its castle still looms directly above the gap.
Dover Castle itself has earned the nickname the "Key to England": the version standing today was largely built by Henry II between 1179 and 1189, but fortification here goes back far further, with a Roman lighthouse and an Anglo-Saxon fort both still visible within the castle's later walls. Centuries after it was built, a real network of tunnels dug beneath the castle served as a genuine military command centre during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
Leeds Castle offers a gentler counterpoint the same day — a genuinely picturesque Kent castle built across two small islands in a lake formed by the River Len, purchased and lovingly restored from a near-derelict state by Lady Olive Baillie in 1926, after serving for centuries as the residence of six medieval English queens.
