About This Tour

Wesley's Chapel, at 49 City Road, opened with a service on 1 November 1778. John Wesley had it built to replace his original London base, the Foundery, where he'd first preached on 11 November 1739 — nearly 40 years earlier.

The Foundery's lease was running out, so in early 1776 Wesley petitioned the City of London for a new, permanent site roughly 200 yards away. The result, designed by George Dance the Younger, the City of London's own Surveyor at the time, is now Grade I listed — a genuinely significant piece of Georgian architecture, not just a historic footnote.

Wesley's adjoining house was completed the following year, in 1779, and he lived there for the rest of his life. Together, the chapel and house form one of the most intact records of Methodism's earliest, most formative years anywhere in the world.
