About This Tour
A private walking tour for your group only — real Whitechapel and Brick Lane streets, tracing the genuine historical case. This is a private walking tour for your group only. Real Whitechapel and Brick Lane streets are walked, tracing the genuine historical Jack the Ripper case.
Walking these streets rather than driving past them changes what you notice. The five confirmed Jack the Ripper murders happened at specific, real locations across a fairly small stretch of the East End: Buck's Row (now Durward Street), Hanbury Street, Berner Street, Mitre Square, and Dorset Street, between 31 August and 9 November 1888. On foot, the genuinely tight geography of these sites — all within easy walking distance of each other — says something about the case that a cab window can't quite convey.
It also says something about Whitechapel itself at the time: a desperately overcrowded, poor district where the victims lived precarious lives on its margins. That context is a real part of why the case became a symbol of Victorian social conditions as much as of an unsolved crime, and it's part of why Brick Lane and the surrounding streets are now home to one of London's most layered immigrant histories, from Huguenot weavers to Bangladeshi curry houses, built on the same ground.
